IV . Before Starting Your Engine 2 3 4 A . Mixing Fuel and Oil NEVER store engine with fuel in fuel tank inside a building with potential sources of ignition such as hot water and space heaters , clothes dryers , electric motors , etc . NOTE DO NOT mix fuel and oil directly in fuel tank . Use of NMMA , TC - WII or TC - W3 , JASO FB or JASO FC classified oil is recommended . Contact your Authorized Tecumseh Servicing Dealer for Tecumseh Oil Part Numbers . 1 . Be sure container is outdoors and in a well - ventilated 1 area . 2 . Fill approved clean red GASOLINE container with 1 / 4 of recommended fuel amount . See Tables 1 and 2 . 7 6 5 3 . Add required amount of recommended oil to fuel . See 1 . Muffler Table 1 . Filling Fuel Tank Gasoline ( fuel ) vapors are highly flam - Figure 1 . Engine Model TC300 mable and can explode . Fuel vapors can spread and be ignited by a spark or flame many feet away from engine . To prevent injury or death from fuel fires , follow these instructions : 1 . Stop engine and allow it to cool before refueling . 2 . Be sure engine is outdoors and in a well - ventilated area . 3 . Clean area around fuel fill cap and remove fuel fill cap . See Figure 1 . NOTE For recommended mixture ratios of fuel and oil , See Table 1 . See â IV . A . Mixing Fuel and Oil â instructions . 4 . Using an approved red GASOLINE container , add fuel mixture slowly , being careful to avoid spilling . DO NOT overfill fuel tank . Leave space in the tank to allow fuel to expand without overflowing . 5 . Replace fuel fill cap securely and wipe up spilled fuel mixture before starting engine . If fuel mixture is spilled DO NOT start engine . Move machine away from area of spillage . Avoid creating any source of ignition until fuel vapors are gone . 181 - 846 - 14 Page 3
C . Check the Following Equipment 1 . Be sure any ignition switch on engine or equipment is in â ON â , â RUN â , or â START â position . See Figure 2 . 2 . Be sure air vent on fuel cap is free of debris . Be sure air vent screw if present , ( see equipment manufacturerâs instructions ) on fuel cap is open . See Figure 3 . V . Starting Your Engine If you are unable to start this engine after following instructions in this manual , contact your Authorized Tecumseh Servicing Dealer . To avoid serious burn injuries or damage to your engine , DO NOT attempt to start or troubleshoot this engine in any other way . For example : Figure 2 . ON / OFF Switch â¢ DO NOT use starting fluid . â¢ DO NOT spray flammable vapors into carburetor or onto air cleaner . I â¢ DO NOT put flammable liquids into carburetor or onto air cleaner . â¢ DO NOT operate engine or pull on starter rope with + spark plug removed . Fuel can spray from spark plug hole and ignite . NOTE If engine is remotely controlled , ( see equipment manufacturerâs instructions ) your equipment may have one or more of the following engine symbols . See Figure 4 . Figure 3 . A . Engine Without Choke and With Primer Bulb 1 . To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning , make sure engine is outdoors in a well - ventilated area . 2 . Move engine throttle control to â START â if present ( see equipment manufacturerâs instructions ) . 3 . When starting a cold engine , push primer bulb firmly with your thumb 3 times , allowing primer bulb to return completely to original position between pushes . See Figure 5 . NOTES Cooler temperatures may require pushing primer bulb firmly with your thumb 5 times . DO NOT use primer to restart a warm engine after a short shut - down . Doing so will flood the engine and may result in equipment malfunction . 4 . Operate equipment control to release engine brake or Figure 5 . Primer Bulb and Starter Handle Location clutch if present ( see equipment manufacturerâs instructions ) . When pulling starter rope , the rope can unexpectedly jerk back toward engine causing serious injury . To avoid this risk , carefully follow these instructions : 5 . Grasp starter cord handle . See Figure 5 . a . Pull rope out slowly until you feel drag . b . Without allowing the rope to retract , continue pulling rope with one rapid full arm stroke . c . Return rope slowly to original position . NOTE Following the instructions listed in the steps above avoids potential damage to the recoil mechanism . 6 . If engine fails to start after 3 attempts repeat steps 2 thru 5 and try again . 7 . If engine does not start after following steps 1 thru 6 , contact your Authorized Tecumseh Servicing Dealer . DO NOT attempt to start or troubleshoot this engine in any other way . 181 - 846 - 14 Page 5
B . Engine With Choke and Without Primer Bulb 3 1 . To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning , make sure engine is outdoors in a well - ventilated area . 2 . Move choke control lever to â FULL CHOKE â position ( see equipment manufacturerâs instructions ) . See Figure 6 . NOTE If restarting a warm engine after a short shutdown , move choke lever to â NO CHOKE â position . When pulling starter rope , the rope can unexpectedly jerk back toward engine causing serious injury . To avoid this risk , carefully follow these instructions : 3 . Grasp starter cord handle . See Figure 7 . 2 a . Pull rope out slowly until you feel drag . 1 . Full Choke 1 b . Without allowing the rope to retract , continue 2 . 1 / 2 Choke pulling rope with one rapid full arm stroke . 3 . No Choke c . Return rope slowly to original position . NOTE Figure 6 . Choke Lever Position Following the instructions listed in the steps above avoids potential damage to the recoil mechanism . 4 . If engine fails to start after 3 attempts repeat steps 2 thru 3 and try again . START TO PULL 5 . When engine starts : a . Momentarily move choke lever to â 1 / 2 CHOKE â I position until engine runs smoothly . b . Next , move choke lever to â NO CHOKE â + position . NOTES If engine starts but falters when choke is moved to â NO CHOKE â position : a . Momentarily move choke control back to â FULL CHOKE â position . Figure 7 . Starter Handle b . Next , move control to â 1 / 2 CHOKE â until engine runs smoothly . c . Finally , move control to â NO CHOKE â position . If engine dies after choke is moved to â NO CHOKE â posi - tion , repeat steps 2 thru 5 to restart engine . 6 . If engine fires but does not continue to run , move choke control lever to â NO CHOKE â position and pull starter rope again . 7 . If engine fails to start after 3 attempts move choke control to â FULL CHOKE â and pull starter rope again . 8 . If engine does not start after following steps 1 thru 7 , contact your Authorized Tecumseh Servicing Dealer . DO NOT attempt to start or troubleshoot this engine in any other way . VI . Stopping Your Engine and Short - Term Storage 1 . Move remote control on equipment , or any ignition stop switch on engine , to â STOP â or â OFF â ( see equipment manufacturerâs instructions ) . See Figure 8 . 2 . Close air vent screw on fuel fill cap if present , ( see equipment manufacturerâs instructions ) . See Figure 9 . Never store the engine with fuel in the fuel tank inside a building with potential sources of ignition such as hot water and space heaters , clothes dryers , electric motors , etc . VII . Maintenance To prevent accidental starting when Figure 8 . Engine Ignition Switch ( Option ) working on equipment , always discon - nect spark plug wire and keep it way from spark plug . B . Muffler and Cylinder Exhaust Ports 2 3 The muffler and cylinder exhaust ports require cleaning after every 50 hours of operation . For this maintenance proce - dure it is recommended that the engine be taken to an Authorized Tecumseh Servicing Dealer . C . Spark Plug Check spark plug yearly or every 50 operating hours . 1 . Clean area around spark plug . 1 2 . Remove and inspect spark plug . 1 . . 030 ( 0.76mm ) Gap 3 . Replace spark plug if porcelain is cracked or if elec - 2 . Electrodes trodes are : 3 . Porcelain â¢ Pitted â¢ Burned Figure 11 . Resistor Spark Plug â¢ Fouled with deposits 4 . Check electrode gap with wire feeler gauge and set gap to . 030 ( 0.76mm ) if necessary . See Figure 11 . 5 . Install spark plug and tighten securely . NOTE A resistor spark plug must be used for replacement ( Tecumseh 4 part no . 611049 , or Champion part no . RJC - 8Y ) . 5 1 D . Cleaning / Replacing Air Filters Your engine has an air cleaner which helps prevent prema - ture engine wear and failure . NEVER run engine without complete air cleaner installed on engine . The filters in the air cleaner periodically need to be cleaned or replaced . NOTE 3 Contact your Authorized Tecumseh Servicing Dealer for 2 Tecumseh Air Cleaner Part Numbers . I . Air Filter Removal / Installation 1 . Remove screws . See Figure 12 . 1 2 . Remove filter cover . 1 . Screw 3 . Remove optional flocked screen if present . 2 . Foam Filter 4 . Remove foam filter . 3 . Flocked Screen ( Optional ) 5 . Remove flocked screen . 4 . Flocked Screen 6 . Thoroughly clean the inside of filter cover and filter 5 . Filter Cover body . 7 .
