Starting & Stopping Choke operation / engine warm - up Start engine This is a low emissions engine which operates differently from Always keep hands and feet clear of mower blade or previously built engines . Adjustments Control adjustments Carburetor adjustments The manufacturer of the equipment on which this engine is installed specifies top speed at which the engine will be operated . DO NOT EXCEED this speed . Differences in fuel , temperature , altitude or load may require minor carburetor adjustment . Air cleaner and air cleaner cov - To prevent accidental starting , WIRE er must be assembled to carburetor before starting engine . remove spark plug wires and discon - nect battery at negative terminal , The carburetor on this engine is low emission . It is equipped when adjusting controls . with an idle mixture valve with a limiter ( see inset ) , which allows some adjustment , and an idle speed adjustment screw . Adjustments Start engine and warm up approximately 5 minutes before ad - To adjust choke control : justing . With engine running , place throttle control in SLOW Remove air cleaner . Move choke controlto CHOKE or START position . Rotate carburetor throttle lever against the idle position . Carburetor choke should be completely closed . If not , speed screw and hold it . Turn idle speed screw to obtain 1300 loosen casing clamp screw . Then move casing , wire and While still holding carburetor throttle lever to 1500 rpm . engine choke lever in direction shown until choke is completely against idle speed screw , turn idle mixture valve with limiter closed . Tighten casing clamp screw . Replace air cleaner . cap screw midway between limits . CARBURETOR IDLE THROTTLE SPEED PULL LEVER SCREW TO CHOKE CHOKE CLOSED LIMITER CAP WIRE AND CASING IDLE MIXTURE VALVE SCREW Carburetor adjustments Choke control adjustment Readjust the idle speed to 1200 rpm , if governed idle spring is red , or 900 rpm , if governed idle spring is white . Release car - buretor throttle lever . Move throttle control to FAST position . To adjust throttle control : Engine should accelerate smoothly . If it does not , readjust idle Remove air cleaner . Move throttle control to FAST position . mixture valves slightly counterclockwise . Swivel should be against throttle stop . If not , loosen casing DO NOT remove limiter caps . DO NOT force beyond limits . clamp screw . Move casing and wire in direction shown by arrow until swivel is against throttle stop . Tighten casing clamp screw . SWIVEL EXHAUST MANIFOLD GOVERNED IDLE SPRING ( RED OR WHITE ) Governed idle spring CASING Note : Engines operated at approximately 3000 to 5000 feet EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROTTLE CLAMP STOP SCREW ( 900 to 1500 meters ) or above sea level may require a high alti - tude carburetor main jet . Start and run engine at idle for COVER CLIPS 30seconds . Stop engine . Wait 30 seconds and re - check oil level . Add oil to bring level toFULL mark on dipstick , if required . Dual element air cleaner Note : Change oil after every 50 hours of operation . Change oil 1 . Unhook clips on both sides of cover and remove cover . every 25 hours if engine is operated under heavy load or in high ambient temperatures . 2 . Carefully slide pre - cleaner off cartridge . To service pre - cleaner , wash in liquid detergent and water . Maintenance Schedule . ) Change oil filter ( Follow Squeeze dry in a clean cloth . Saturate in engine oil . Squeeze Replace oil filter after every 100 hours of operation . Drain in clean , absorbent cloth to remove all EXCESS oil . Replace if engine oil and replace with fresh oil . Before installing new very dirty or damaged . filter , lightly oil filter gasket with fresh , clean oil . Screw filter on 3 . Remove knob and plate . Carefully remove cartridge to by hand until gasket contacts oil filter adapter . Tighten 1 / 2 to prevent debris from entering carburetor . 3 / 4 turn more . Start and run engine at idle to check for leaks . To service cartridge , clean by tapping gently on a flat surface . Stop engine . Re - check oil level . Add oil if required . Do not oil cartridge . Replace if very dirty or damaged . Note : Do not use petroleum solvents , e.g . , kerosene , which will rto cause the cartridge to deteriorate . Do not use pressurized ai clean cartridge . Pressurized air can damage the cartridge . 4 . Reinstall cartridge , plate and knob . 5 . Reassemble pre - cleaner on cartridge . 6 . Replace cover and reattach clips to body . OIL FILTER OIL DRAIN Keep muffler area clean and muffler in working order . P / N SEE PAGE 8 PLUG Oil drain Oil filter Daily or more often , before running engine , clean muffler area to remove all grass and combustible debris . Oil Pressure If engine muffler is equipped with spark arrester screen , remove 2 If oil pressure drops below 1 - 4 psi ( . 1 - . 2 kg / cm ) , anoil pressure for cleaning and inspection . Replace if damaged or plugged . switch ( if engine is equipped ) will either activate a warning device or stop the engine . Check oil level with dipstick . If oil level ARRESTER is betweenADD andFULL mark on dipstick , Do not try to restart engine . Contact an Authorized Briggs & Stratton Service Dealer . Do not operate engine until oil pressure is corrected . If oil level is belowADD mark on dipstick , add oil to bring level CLEAN to FULL mark . Restart engine and check oil pressure .
